The headache Bass has when he wakes up makes him wish he'd actually shot himself, because that would've been over fast. The warm press of a sleeping Miles next to him, though, makes him remind himself that headaches pass. Parts of the conversation the night before flicker back to him and he bites back a groan and thanks a god he only sort of still believes in that he hadn't gone and spilled every secret and screwed everything up. He can only imagine the awkward of this morning if he had.

Sex toys and anal training are bad enough. Jesus.

He eases away from Miles to hit the head and take care of necessities, before heading down to find his saddle bag, fishing around in it, hoping against hope that he still has some willow bark or opium lettuce sap (he'd kill for actual opium, but, well. Harder to snag the stuff when hanging out with Mathesons. But Gene had been all up on other painkillers, so.) He sighs in relief when he finds he still has a good supply of the little sap balls.

After getting water and knocking a couple back, he leaves some on the bedside table with water for Miles, then heads back toward where they'd set up camp (before he decided to leave), feeling terribly guilty that they'd left Charlie alone all night--Christ knows she's grieving, too.

That Miles might freak out that he isn't there when he wakes up doesn't occur to him--Bass promised to stay; he keeps his promises. Besides, breakfast (preferably something carb heavy, so he's really hoping they still had some hardtack if nothing else--but maybe something more since the town had been pretty well provisionied and no one needs it anymore) is back at camp. God bless that girl, she has actual coffee going (God bless Texas--something he never thought he'd say, but. God bless Texas.) She might make faces at it, and them for drinking it, but Bass declares she's a goddess, and they don't talk about how he left or what he was going to do. After she heads out to do a little scouting for provisions or maybe hunting, or maybe she just doesn't know what to say to him right now, even though she's glad he stayed and is making excuses, Bass pours a second cup, sitting by the fire and trying not to let his mind wander either in dark directions or dangerous ones, focusing on here and now and not what could have been or might still be.

The coffee is precious, still, and he does congratulate himself on leaving Miles some. That's how much he loves him.

Bass has been second and third guessing himself and this since she said she was coming. That's twenty (seventeen) more minutes to wonder what the hell he's doing and read back over his texts to her and hers back and even almost totally talk himself out of the way he read that last one. He flipped her worldview upside down? Ok, great. Doesn't mean he flipped it in a way she likes it. Could well be she's coming here to tell him to stop being...well, okay. She said he was too hot to be creepy. That's positive.

Miles has, in fact, neglected to tell Bass anything about Charlie's boyfriend, though it's likely her knuckles will tell their own tale. The man isn't blind...which he is demonstrating quite well, now, as he can't seem to look away from Charlie in her far-too-short dress, gaze sliding over her from head to bare toes and lingering in places that make Miles slap him upside the back of the head like Gibbs did on NCIS back in the day.

"Eyes forward, Marine," he says as Bass flashes him a wtf? look for the headslap. Calling out to Charlie, he adds, "You didn't have to wait outside. I told you I'd make him stay in the car."

"Wait, what?" Bass shoots him another look, then gets out of the car as Charlie wobbles, moving toward her because she's looking a little too unsteady, and letting her fall on her far-too-delectable ass would be wrong--especially since that would undoubtedly give them another glance at those fantasy-inducing sheer panties that will have Miles doing more than slapping him. He's not nearly as drunk as she is, but definitely a few in, and if his gaze finds its way to her eye-catching cleavage, well...he's facing her, now, isn't he? His eyes are forward. And Miles can't really see where it lingers.

He gives her a bemused look, though as his hand closes around her elbow. "Analogy for what?"

Miles sighs, 'cause, yeah, he'd been hoping to avoid that question. "Doesn't matter; just help her in the car. And stop staring at whatever you're staring at." He can't see it, but he knows Bass a little too well.

Things to know:

End of semester/writing deadlines/conference deadlines = me likely to disappear. I will try to let folks know what’s going on, but sometimes I forget.
I spend a lot of time on roller skates and out and about with derby and social stuff. Sometimes I’ll tag from phone, sometimes not.
I’m an academic, and my focus tends to be on gender/sexuality issues and cultural critique—this can lead to rants about things like compulsory heteronormativity and history lessons on the importance of subtext and how dismissing people’s readings of texts can be colonialist and misogynistic. This tends to come out more systemic and cultural level than aimed at any one character or show, though, and I tend to hold fandom to higher standards than the media industry, because I like to think that we’re a more subversive subculture, even when we…often aren’t.
(this one gets a little long, but—whee advocacy and education!) I have severe ADHD and while I do take meds to make me able to function in life, it still affects me. A lot of people hear ADHD and think “hyperactive kids in the classroom” or “parents unable to control kids, and overmedicating into quiet.” This isn’t the case. Yeah, it probably is overdiagnosed, but for those who genuinely have it, it is a real thing that results in neuro-atypical functioning of the brain in ways that neurotypical people have trouble understanding. I’m big on educating folks about it, so you’re likely to see things. Some of the main implications this has in interacting with me:

o I have a hard time judging tone/intent in online interaction, and sometimes won’t engage in a discussion/debate (despite a love of debate) because I don’t want to stir up drama (I’ve had too many things I’ve written misunderstood through the years)

o When I care passionately about something, I can get laser focused and then really confrontational, so, again, sometimes I just won’t engage, not because of other people, but because I know I will get too invested and upset myself

o As part of my ADHD, I also have rejection-sensitive dysphoria – I hate being teased and am very easily convinced that people don’t want to play/write/whatever with me. If I perceive that rejection or withdrawal, I can get completely, irrationally devastated. This plays into the two above, because I am terrified of people I care about being angry with me. Like, one fight and I’ll be convinced you’ll never speak to me again. You don’t tag me back for a while and I get convinced you hate playing with me and think my muse sucks and are only humoring me out of pity. Note—I am aware of this, now, finally, after years of just thinking I was “taking it too personally” (which I am, but the dismissive nature of that phrase without understanding WHY is…hurtful). I know what’s causing it and that’s helping me address it. I recognize it’s not rational, and it is my problem not yours. I’m not asking anyone to accommodate it—just trying to make people aware, because, inevitably, it’ll come up. The only thing I ask is that you don’t just dismiss it/call me oversensitive/tell me to get over it. I know I’m oversensitive, but it is chemically and physically how my brain works. I am cognitively trying to work on it, to not react where people can see it, but the medication out there to try and help with this has way too many side effects and I don’t want to take a pill for everything, y’know? So—don’t worry about accommodating, just be aware of what’s going on with me and why I might sometimes react the way I do before I catch myself. The best way to deal with it if it comes up is be reassuring. If you are dismissive, I’ll just hear more criticism and spiral down farther. Tell me it’s okay, tell me what you like about playing with me, whatever. I’ll be grateful forever.

o On that note—irrational mood swings are also part of the package and my inability to control musebleed is tied up in it all, too. I’m not delusional—I know the difference between reality and fiction, but my inner world is hyper-real to me, so I cannot write from an emotionally detached place. Don’t worry—it’ll pass. But also, my own mood swings can be just as volatile—someone says something nice or something goes well and I’m flying high, and I can be brought crashing down by one word. There is rarely a “level” emotional state for me and…not much that can be done about that save being aware and trying to talk myself up when the crashing depression hits.

o On another note: I have absolutely zero sense of time. I lose hours in hyperfocus on one or two things (like I’ll start making one or two icons and ten hours later, I’m still in Photoshop, haven’t eaten or tagged or answered texts or anything and have no idea where the time went.) Everyone has experienced this sometimes—it happens for me a lot. I also generally have no sense of how long it’s been SINCE something—which affects my RP discussed below!

Me as a RPer:

I have a goal to tag everything back at least once a day. I often fail at this, but I’m trying to be better.
I have a tendency to play broken sociopaths or the broken people who love them.
I have a few “hero” types—I’m REALLY slow tagging them, ‘cause they are such a challenge.
When working, I will usually stick to one muse to tag on breaks and then hit the rest when I’m done working for the day (otherwise I’d never get anything done)
I will occasionally get sucked into a really loud muse/really emotional thread and forget to tag anything else. This doesn’t mean I don’t love everything else I’m doing and everyone else I’m playing with—it just means I’m having a hard time pulling focus.
I will backtag into infinity, but if it’s been a really long time between tags (more than a couple of weeks), check in with me to make sure I can still access headspace (if it’s a lighter thread, probably no problem. More emotionally intense and I’ll have to make sure I can pick it back up)
If I haven’t tagged you back on something and you know I’m around, please feel free to poke me about it. I do not bite unless you beg me to, and I may have just misplaced it or it dropped off radar, but if I know you’re waiting for it I will put it at top of the list.
The other option if I haven’t tagged is right out of the last point on the ADHD above—I literally lose track of time and can think that I just tagged you this morning when I tagged you a week ago. Yes, I see the dates in my inbox? They just don’t…click to awareness sometimes. I’ll go to tag something and it’ll say “6 days ago” and I’ll go, “…WTF?!?” So—it really isn’t you. It’s me. Poke me.
On the flip side—I have a really hard time poking people, because I hate feeling like I might be a bother (even tho I never feel bothered when poked, but). So…if you’re good with poking? I’d love it if you let me know. LOL
When I get super-stressed/super-busy/super-sick, I may still be okay juggling multiple muses, but might struggle with multiple similar ones (i.e. Fall semester 2013 I sort of had to back off both Klaus and Peter because Bass was so loud, but when I tried playing all three of them, Peter started calling people “sweetheart” and Bass sprouted claws), so, again, don’t be afraid to ask if I haven’t tagged you back and if that’s what’s going on, I will let you know and please bear with me and know that it’s not you, and I will get back to it, probably within a week.
I am NOT a huge fan of negative CR (weird, I know, with who I play). I do absolutely believe IC actions = IC consequences, and if my muses do shitty things, they deserve to suffer for it. But some people like to play drama for drama's sake...I don't. Like, at all. Conflict makes a story move, and I don't want to play rainbows and fluffy feels, but plot moving conflict is not the same as negative CR, in my head. I like drama and angst that has a reason and a point and be part of a plot, and I need to know that it is going to have a resolution. I can't fix shit in real life too often--I need to be able to fix it in RP. What this means?
- If our muses don't get along and aren't ever going to get along? I will likely not have them thread that often. I far, far prefer it if they just avoid each other. I don't like just playing people being bitchy at each other that often. A thread here and there? Ok. All the time? I will avoid it and the muses involved like the plague.Antagonistic BS stresses me out. Like, I get hives.
- So, I don't want to play pointless fights. Some of my muses can get bickering/bitchy (see: Bass & Klaus), but that usually comes from somewhere and I would FAR rather deal with the underlying issues. Or have someone call them on being little bitches and put them in their place..so they can come back with puppy eyes eventually.
- If we break our muses, I'm going to want to find a way to fix them. We can break them again, later, but. I need to know it can be fixed and that there is an end in sight.
- If I have a bunch of negative threads going on...I am likely to slow down on them/or have to stop tagging for a couple of days and go tag a fixable sort of thing, or a fluffy thing to balance it, especially when I'm stressed. Also--if I have a bunch of negative things going already, and you want to start another negative thing? I'm likely to tell you, "not now." Please don't take it personally. It's just that I will hate it, I will be miserable, I won't want to tag it and RP is supposed to be fun. I can only take so much angst and anger and fighting at a time.
